UDL Group began its operation several generations ago in 1887 and became distributors of W.D & H.O. Wills cigarettes in undivided India, to begin with. After partition of the sub-continent, several offices were established in major cities of Pakistan.Over decades since 1947, many multinationals and large Pakistani companies have held business relationships with the group. In the early 90’s the ownership and management of the group was divided into two sub-groups, within the family and once again in 2010. This part of the UDL Group is currently engaged into pharmaceutical manufacturing (as a division of First UDL Modaraba) and Islamic financing activities (also as a division of First UDL Modaraba). First UDL Modaraba was formed in 1991 under the Modaraba Companies and Modaraba (Floatation and Control) Ordinance, 1980, having its registered office at C-117/1 KDA Scheme 1.Tipu Sultan Road Karachi. The Modaraba is listed on the Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad Stock Exchanges. There are two divisions of the Modaraba i.e. Finance Division and Pharmaceutical Division
FINANCIAL DIVISION-FIRST UDL MODARABA
The Financial Division of the Modaraba is engaged in providing Islamic financing to other business entities in the country. Finance Division is engaged in providing finance on Murabaha and Musharaka arrangements, ijara, commodity trading and trading in listed and non-interest bearing securities. Performance wise, the Modaraba is amongst the top five in its category of financial activities, in the country.
UDL PHARMACEUTICALS (A DIVISION OF FIRST UDL MODARABA)
In the year 2012, a new pharmaceutical division was established to diversify into manufacturing and trading activities of pharmaceutical products. With the top management having proven expertise in the pharmaceutical sector of Pakistan by virtue of being associated as shareholders of Searle Pakistan Limited until the division of assets within the family in 2010, it is safe to say that UDL can take maximum benefit from this experience.
UDL PHARMACEUTICALS MANUFACTURING PLANT
The Modaraba has a medium sized running pharmaceutical plant situated on two acres of land, at Port Qasim industrial zone. After carrying out all the balancing and modernization, the plant is now state of the art. All necessary approvals from the Ministry of Health have been obtained.
The plant currently has the following approved sections:
